    • Something I'm not sure you're aware of. Many people are not aware of it. You can actually run those hydrogen fuel cells off of hydroxy gas. That's just where you take electricity and crack hydrogen from oxygen in water. The end product which is not separated is called hydroxy gas when it burns it goes back into being water. You can even buy a type of modification to a carburetor to go on an older style vehicle so that they can run on hydroxy gas in an internal combustion engine. However not many people know that you can run a hydrogen fuel-cell off of hydroxy gas to.

  • This is really exciting! Maybe we can get more beef production if we can utilize manure for energy! I never liked the idea of the battery powered car. The batteries have limited range and require long periods of time to recharge them. In addition they require the excavation of hundreds of tons of earth for each pound of rare earth materials required for the batteries. Toyota is an amazing company which follows the principles taught by Dr. Deming. I think the cost of hydrogen will come down and the price of cars will become equivalent to today's prices! Really exciting!

  • For some reason started seeing a ton of people talking about hydrogen cars. I work for Honda and they're one of the first companies to make a really big push for hydrogen (this is not really a new thing btw, started within the last 20+ years I believe). It ended up being a kinda of a fail, and thus was relegated to pet project status at the company. The current process of making hydrogen is highly inefficient. It actually takes more energy to make hydrogen than what you can get out of it. Another big issue with hydrogen is transportation and storage. It's a highly volatile fuel with a ton of safety regulations attached to it. This makes it very expensive to transport and store. All this makes accessibility and availability a huge issue as well (main reason why I think it's a commercial failure and was relegated to pet project status).

    • hm.... both of those things are not correct so I remain unconvinced. funny thing about hydrogen cars... takes about 5 to 10 mins to fill... but then the machine is down for 5 to 10 mins after to thaw the pump.... so still a slow process if more than one person is fueling. my experience with electric is i generally am not worried about recharging because i start every day with a full battery. When I do have to charge is IS an inconvenience... but im not sure that single inconvenience is enough to disregard all of the benefits especially the pure efficiency of Battery electric over Fuel Cell or Hydrogen Combustion. always willing to learn more though.

It's just a scam by petrochemical companies to stop Trillions of bucks worth of infrastructure becoming obselete overnight. You would be better off using that electricity to distill Vodka.

  • They already have boats (well a demonstrator proving it) that can run on hydrogen. They extract hydrogen from the water using wind and solar power then powers the vessel itself forward. They also added sails which doubles as a propellant (obviously not useful on a car). So there are ways to use non-fossil fuel production to make hydrogen even without using a vast source such as poop, but just wind and solar (and nuclear, for that matter).

  • Honda where using and trying to push hydrogen 15 years ago, it’s gone nowhere. The momentum is firmly on the EV side? This could be down to the fact, a simple fact that electricity is already available in every city in every developed country on the planet! Think about it, all the sunny 🌞 countries will harvest solar power, they’ve largely ignored it due to the powers of the petro chemical industry. I think we’ll see theme parks in Saudi along with solar harnessing farms as the Arabs realise its almost over. Imagine if the US petro dollars are no longer significant force in the world’s economy? How will the Saudis pay for the protection of the US. It gets complicated!

  • The ONLY way to radically reduce carbon emissions sufficiently and quickly enough to make a positive impact is by going all in on nuclear, specifically small modular reactors. These could provide the reliable and relatively inexpensive power needed to transition from hydrocarbons to hydrogen, as they can be transported just about anywhere and set up and maintained fairly easily. It's conceivable that they could be paired with "on demand" hydrogen filling stations, which would resolve a major economic and technical problem with hydrogen, that being leakage during and between transport and storage. This will require a significant amount of political conflict to bring about, as the NIMBY'S and pseudo-greens will violently oppose it, not to mention Elon Musk, but it is the only way to keep vehicles affordable for most people, as batteries for EV's are dependent on a shrinking supply of resources, pretty much ensuring they will be expensive toys for the rich long into the future, despite their short term effort to create a mass market vehicle.

  • The one thing about the new hydrogen economy is that it MUST be decentralised. It must be not only produced with wind, solar etc...and dirty hydrogen must be taxed into oblivion, the production of hydrogen should not be consolidated into the hands of a few power players that can afford to build vast solar array plants, but instead the focus should be on home garage based reactors, where mom and pop can contribute and make and sell their own hydrogen. This fundamental difference is a socio-political imperative, because we have done the 20th century model with fossil fuels and that was inadequate for quality of life for the majority.
