  • Great documentary, but Wilhelm's words about his hands aren't to do with incest You should change this error in the narration. As a person who has experienced incest, what you describe as incest is plain wrong. Queen Victoria was a Narcissist. Her daughter wasn't able to deal with her perceived failure to protect baby Wilhelm as he was born but that was the doctor's negligence. Poor little Wilhelm! Vicky couldn't accept him with his disability, and couldn't support him, because of her own childhood deficits. It's complicated, but I recognise it. My mother was a Narcissist too. Little Wilhelm needed lots of reassurance, as all children do. He was made to feel inadequate, and he grew to be a Narcissist too. He obviously had the genetic predisposition to Narcissism.

  • The dreams do not seem like they’re revealing sexual desire at all. The child’s dreams (which he cannot control) is very revealing to his subconscious mind. Though it doesn’t take digging deep into the subconscious to determine he’s clearly desiring his mother’s love, attention & acceptance. Dreams are so often symbolic, and these dreams don’t seem to be pointing to sexual desire at all. The hand is a focus in the dreams and his hand was deformed. It sounds to me like an innocent dream, revealing emotional pain from his handicap and maternal emotional neglect.

IT'S CLEAR WHERE THEIR MINDS ARE! this poor child was talking about dreaming in a sense he had dreams of them spending time together! Like you know... A mother should! And like EVERYONE else in the comments has said, he is obsessing about her perfect arm/hands! But he is only speaking of wanting her love as a mother and parent! Omg wtf is wrong with these people! It's beyond sad how he grew up :,( And another thing, they kissed each others hands back then, as a sign of respect! It is obvious he just wanted her to accept him, and let him show respect like a normal person did back then.

Its his left arm which is damaged: therefore it is HER left hand he sees, and what his dreams mean to me, is that he is showing affection to his mum, the way he wishes she'd shown him. Instead, she shuns him: he's literally crying out for love and affection 🤔

  • I found this documentary odd. There’s no question whatsoever that Wilhelm suffered terribly as a child, not simply from the injury caused by birth but the rejection of his family and their seemingly endless attempts to fix the unfixable. And while we hear a lot about Vicky and her mother, what was his father’s behaviour and feelings towards his eldest son? And as for the letters he sent his mother, I think he was simultaneously seeking her love and expressing his desire to be treated normally despite his injury as well as trying to make her feel some level of guilt.

  • Isn't it a bit strange that Kaiser Wilhelm alone is charged with the entire guilt of causing World War I, and the haughty British Royalty with their dominant world empire that economically strangled not only Germany, but many other nations' desire to achieve self government and independence was crushed by British Imperialism and its punishing colonialism!

    • If we want to indulge in fantastic speculations like this idiotic inference of latent incestuous feelings for his mother, then we could also create an equally specious theory that those English doctors actually had a negative and irreversible effect on Kaiser Wilhelm's actual career! If the one English doctor had been successful in treating his father, Kaiser Friedrich Wilhelm for cancer, then his father's reign most certainly would have lasted much longer than the extremely short 99 days that he was given, and Wilhelm II would have had a much longer time to be nurtured by Chancellor Otto von Bismarck, into being better able to conduct his somewhat impulsive foreign policy and to make more introspective and objective decisions! That might have made his earlier less mature foreign policy and military alliance decisions with a more balanced approach! We will never know because he assumed the Prussian throne so prematurely! So, indirectly that one English doctor's inability to keep his father alive, eventually caused him to follow his reign without sufficient preparation or enough of Bismarck's uncanny skill at effective diplomacy to make it possible for Germany to avoid being sucked into World War I in 1914! Think about the chain of events this might well have prevented! If Germany had not been embroiled in World War I, they and all of Europe would certainly not have lost close to 20,000,000 men, and since Germany might well have avoided any defeat in that avoidable war, they would probably not been invoved in their version of our GREAT DEPRESSION, which caused a horrendous socio-economic disaster that, in the end, brought them, and most of the world, the rise of the Nazi dictator, Adolf Hitler, and World War II, that caused at least 50,000,000 more deaths, among them 6,000,000 deaths in his insanely cruel holocaust!

      Michael PattonMichael PattonСарын өмнө
    • And I find this ridiculous and scandalous assertion about a possible incestuous and illicit desire of young Wilhelm for his mother, Victoria, is more British slander! It is more natural that Wilhelm longed merely for real motherly affection, and nothing more!

  • How disappointing that these educated men, historians and a Professor could interpret these letters as indications of incestuous feelings. Freud himself taught that humans store repressed feelings in the sub conscious mind and that these emerge as dreams. Wilhelm specifically spoke of the dreams of his mother’s hands and drew attention to her white hands and her good left hand.....contrasting her hands, especially her left hand in a sense of perfection and beauty as in stark opposition to his disabled left arm and hand. He was taught to hate and loathe his disabled arm. Obviously no such direct discussion came from his mother, so he repressed his conflicting emotions about her “acceptable” hands (even deeming them perfect and beautiful) as opposed to his hands and specifically left arm/hand which was disabled and paralysed. Victoria set him up in this flawed way of thinking by rejecting him throughout his life. His dreams were focused on the beauty of her hands and how he wanted them to touch him. Talk about childhood emotional abandonment and rejection....all from a mother who could only project her negative destructive attitude toward her son. Victoria set him up to repress his feelings of conflict (commending hers as acceptable and beautiful to touch him with, as opposed to his own repugnant and unacceptable disabled arm/hand). No wonder he dreamed his repressed feelings. And more so from not being able to talk to anyone about his deep seated pain. This man just wanted to be accepted and loved for who he was despite his disability.

  • I truly love historical documentaries and therefore Absolute History for their information and beautiful pictures. But only if they are serious about the information - and they should if one already spent so much money on making such beautiful documentaries. I might be able to laugh at the same page turned again and again and again. And again (yes, I now also think about the spoon). But the moment the music itensifies and the truth get's strained, I start to doubt the whole video and everything that was mentioned. Modern Psychology has a lot to offer, why focus on Freud's stuff? It somehow sounds like he tried to pressure his mother into realizing how little she showered him with affection. Yes, he is ignoring her boundaries, which is usually a key element of sexual tension, but he seems desperate for her affection and he seems to focus on her left hand. I wouldn't deny he was abnormally fixated on her, maybe tested out first sexual thoughts on her or the like if you want, but it's just one aspect of a whole picture. Imagine she never hugged him but only gave him her hand, in order to keep him on a distance, to never let him close to her heart because there was no place for him - and he feelt that. So he started to of course focus on her hand as a symbol of connection and love. Just as an example. Didn't take much time, but it helps to complete the picture that was left with sexual tension alone. Which just doesn't feel correct. Also, I would have cared more for the letters. Not just parts of them, all of at least a few letters. I could pause the video and read some of it, but it's still so little, while they talk as if there was an abundance of letters.
